Crown Heights Racial Violence
The Black-Jewish tensions and clashes in Crown Heights, Brooklyn took us many times to that troubled neighborhood. The Coalition led a highly successful “unity walk” of blacks and Jews together in Crown Heights, along with other New Yorkers of all colors and faiths. We also sponsored a joint memorial gathering in Crown Heights, where blacks and Jews in ample numbers came together in peace to commiserate about the tragic death of young Gavin Cato, the black child who was struck by a car driven by a Hasidic Jew, a car that had careened out of control, a terrible accident, as well as to mourn the death by killing of Yankel Rosenbaum, the Hasidic scholar who was stabbed in a race riot involving marauders, some who shouted, “Kill the Jews.”
